How to add an email signature in Thunderbird

Thunderbird doesn't take a pasted rich signature; it wants the HTML code itself. Sounds technical, but it's just copy and paste, with one checkbox.

  • ABOUT 3 MIN
  • Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Full HTML
  • Logo & photo work

Step by step

6 steps
  1. 1

    Step 01 / 06

    Copy the HTML code

In the builder, use Copy HTML to copy the raw code, or Download .html to save the file. The regular Copy signature button won't work here.

  2. 2

    Step 02 / 06

    Open Account Settings

Click the menu ☰ top right and choose Account Settings (or Tools › Account Settings in the menu bar).

  3. 3

    Step 03 / 06

    Select your account

Click your email address at the top of the left column (not one of the sub-items). The Signature text box is on that page.

  4. 4

    Step 04 / 06

    Tick Use HTML and paste

Tick Use HTML (e.g., <b>bold</b>), click into the box and paste the code with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on Mac). It will look like code; that's right.

  5. 5

    Step 05 / 06

    Or attach the file

Prefer the file? Tick Attach the signature from a file instead and choose your downloaded .html file. Keep it somewhere you won't delete it.

  6. 6

    Step 06 / 06

    Test it

Settings save automatically. Write a new email: the signature should appear fully formatted.

P.S. Good to know

  • Your signature only shows as designed if you write HTML emails. Check Composition & Addressing › Compose messages in HTML format for the account.
  • Thunderbird puts “-- ” above signatures in plain-text mode only. In HTML mode you get the signature as designed.
  • Several identities on one account? Each identity (Manage Identities) has its own signature box.

Not working?

The most common problems, and what to do about them.

I see the code in my emails instead of the signature.

The Use HTML box isn't ticked, or you're writing in plain-text mode. Tick it and turn on HTML composing for the account.

Can I just paste the formatted signature?

Not in the settings box: it only takes text or HTML code. You can paste the formatted version into a new email, but then you'd have to do it every time.

Images don't load in the new email.

Thunderbird may block remote content in your own drafts. Recipients usually see the images. Send a test to another address to be sure.

No signature yet?

Make one in two minutes.

Free, no account, no watermark. Copy it and paste it into Thunderbird with the steps above.
